SEATTLE, WA, Mar. 29, 2011 -- The City of Toppenish, WA, has agreed to pay $134,500 for wastewater violations spanning a two year period, from 2008 to 2010.
The city's municipal wastewater treatment facility treats domestic wastewater from residential and commercial sources, and discharges wastewater into the Toppenish Drain, which flows to the Yakima River.
Between 2008 and 2010, the facility exceeded levels of ammonia, zinc and copper allowed in its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit more than 1,800 times.
When made aware of the unauthorized discharges, the facility worked to correct them and replaced faulty equipment. The wastewater treatment facility has since been in compliance.
