Costa Rica's water and sewerage utility AyA is looking to promote a concessions model to encourage the development of water and sanitation initiatives, project manager Francisco Valverde told BNamericas.
"Costa Rica does not have experience with water concessions. However, the option is open for firms to develop projects under this model," Valverde said. "Our institution is promoting projects under a concessions system and if they arise, we would definitely work to develop them," he added.
AyA has had difficulties carrying out some water projects due to the time it takes to design them. A concessions model would help remove this obstacle, according to Valverde.
"Under this system, the awardee designs and builds the project and we only supervise and approve works. This helps save both AyA's and the country's resources," the official said.
Costa Rica's congress recently received two bills aimed to introduce a new water law, which would allow for concessioned water and sanitation projects, BNamericas reported previously.
