Cavity pumps improve sludge conveyance in hessian wastewater treatment plant, Germany

NETZSCH Pumpen & Systeme GmbH has provided special pumps to the municipal works of a small town in South Hesse, Germany to convey thickened sludge with a high dry matter content without the risk of overpressure. The company’s NEMO® BF progressing cavity pumps have been equipped additionally with a bridge breaker and lubricant injection to prevent accumulation of sludge. The Hessian wastewater plant was producing thickened sludge with a dry solids ratio of 25% to 27%, which could no longer flow but had to be transported through the plant. NETZSCH provided two special progressing cavity pumps that are capable of ensuring thickened sludge conveyance at a stable pressure and volume, regardless of viscosity. The progressing cavity pumps convey media with such a high dry matter content due to a conveyance principle, in which a rotor rotates in an oscillating motion within a fixed stator, resulting in conveying chambers being formed and media being transported from the inlet to the discharge side. The pump also has a horizontally positioned conveying screw around the coupling rod. https://pumps.netzsch.com/en/

Desert water line project uses Mcelroy fusion machine to support drought mitigation

McElroy’s MegaMc® 1600 fusion machine was selected to fuse pipe in support of drought mitigation activities being undertaken by the U.S. As part of the project 48” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe was fused to replace a failing 42” concrete pipeline.

R&B Company of San Jose, Calif., a utility supply solutions company, supplied the machine that would best fit the application along with 40,000 feet of pipe. The MegaMc 1600 wheeled fusion machines have been used on large-diameter pipe jobs in a variety of applications worldwide. They feature four-jaws with more than 80,000 lbs. of fusion force allowing operators to overcome heavier drag forces and fuse thicker-wall pipes. Standing 9-feet tall and stretching 15-feet in length, the 21,000-pound machine is hydraulically powered. When considering a pipe material, a multi-disciplinary team of engineers analysed many types, including steel and reinforced concrete, but selected JM Eagle’s PE 4710 SDR 17/IPS 125 recommended by R&B. The crew will eventually be performing a total of about 600 pipe fusions for the six-mile pipeline and are planning on being able to perform about 12 fusions a day. www.mcelroy.com

High temperature aerobic digester targets organic content using extremophile bacteria

Advetec has launched an enhanced version of its high temperature aerobic digestion process. The Rapid Thermal Organic Reduction system, or ‘RapTOR’, a development of the company’s Bio-Thermic Digester (BTD), has been reengineered to increase throughput and extend the range of difficult waste streams that can be processed. These include sewage sludge, food waste, mixed solid waste and Organic Fines, digesting organic content during a 72-hour cycle. Waste volumes with the next generation RapTOR has been increased and sustainable reductions between 45% up to 95% have been achieved depending on the waste stream. At its heart is a cocktail of extremophile bacteria and specially developed nutrients which thrive at high temperatures, rapidly digesting any organic material and extracting clean water to leave a waste product that can be used as RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) or as a soil improver, depending on the input waste stream.

Enhancements to the RapTOR include a new heat and moisture recovery system, to improve biological efficiency and reduce running costs. This takes heat generated by the exothermic process and re-used to sustain the high temperature environment for the bacteria.
