UV Systems Technology has been awarded a $1 million contract by the city of Peterborough, Ontario, to provide an Ultra Guard™ high-efficiency UV disinfection system to treat 30 mgd of municipal wastewater.
The Ontario Ministry of Environment agreed to the proposed upgrading of the city?s wastewater treatment plant with the stipulation that the city switch from sodium hypochlorite disinfection of the final effluent to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection.
The city?s consultant, CH2M Hill Gore & Storrie Limited, was retained to provide design and project management services. During the pre-design phase of the project, the consultant and city staff pre-qualified two suppliers of the UV disinfection technology, including UV Systems Technology. Each conducted on-site testing and submitted a tender for the supply and installation of the UV system on Aug. 19, 1999.
Based on technical merit and 20 year life cycle cost analysis, the consultant recommended that the contract be awarded to UV Systems.
The company?s dose delivery system is unique in that the reactor chamber surrounding each lamp multiplies the effect of the more intense lamp and delivers disinfection over a wider range of wastewater characteristics and solids concentrations. The design is intended to perform to a given standard with 30 times fewer lamps than low pressure low-intensity and three times fewer lamps than high pressure high-intensity options, said Peter Colak, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for UV Systems.
