As the name implies, a Container Filter is a sludge handling box with a filter system inside which retains solids and allows liquids to pass through and out of the container. The Container Filter is constructed in such a way that liquid can gravity drain from the container, can be removed under a vacuum, or can do both simultaneously.

In the simplest embodiment of a Container Filter, sludge is pumped or conveyed into the unit, liquid drains out, and the retained solids are carted off in the container for disposal. The unit is both the dewatering device and the vehicle for disposal. If the sludge doesnt gravity drain fast enough to suit the purposes of the situation, a vacuum pump can be used to pull liquids through the filter cake, accelerating the drainage rate.

Initially Container Filters were used on sludges with high sand or large grain solid content, but over the years the applications have grown to include high silt, clay and fine solid content. With the addition of the Poly-Mate polymer mixing and injection unit the number of sludge dewatering applications has expanded dramatically. When the correct kind and amount of polymer is added to the sludge prior to entering the Container Filter, practically any sludge can be dewatered.
