Available in a variety of corrosion-resistant finishes that are able to withstand even the harshest conditions, davit cranes are made even more versatile by a choice of mounting options. Surface-mounted pedestal bases are the most popular type of mounting options, while flush- or wall-mount bases offer an unobstructed area when the crane is removed or relocated to another base.
A base extension is now available for flush- and wall-mounting options in order to retain the crane's original height, which may be necessary to make lifts over obstructions. Some cranes can be mounted on utility trucks or are available with wheeled bases, which have proven to be extremely helpful around treatment plant maintenance shops.
Where electricity is available and longer lifts are needed, power winch operation is the most popular choice; however, hand winch or manual operation is just as effective with a bit more physical effort required. Portable davit cranes can be easily transported and quickly set up at lift stations for pump maintenance or repair. Where heavier lifts are needed, a stationary crane with a power winch is a wise choice.
New improvements are continually being made to make these cranes easier to set up, disassemble and use, regardless of where they're installed. Some, for example, require no tools for assembly or disassembly. Also, several models have been designed specifically for the water treatment industry and feature extended heights and reaches to accommodate lifts over railings and other obstructions commonly found at treatment facilities.
A selection of accessories are also available that are sure to make treatment plant operators' lives a bit easier: adjustable boom lengths, angles, base extensions, and bearings are all making the davit crane a favorite "tool" around treatment plants.
