Construction works on the new US$10-million water desalination station started in Ghalilah, located north of Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. According to the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA), the project will be completed by the first half of 2004.
The station will pump three million gallons per day of desalinated seawater produced by reverse osmosis. The new desalination station will contribute to water projects in Ras Al Khaimah and increase desalination capacity of the Emirate by three million gallons a day. Currently, Ras Al Khaimah enjoys a desalination capacity of six million gallons per day produced by the Emirate's four desalination stations, three of which are based in Al Nakheel, while the forth is in Burairat.
Earlier this year, the FEWA board decided to establish the desalination plant in the Ghalilah area in response to complaints made by nationals and residents in the northern Emirate zone of increasing salinity in the drinking water.
