By September 2004, the newly built South Milan water treatment plant will operate the largest UV wastewater disinfection plant on the European continent, processing the wastewater of almost one million persons of the industrial metropolis with its 1.8 million residents.

Wedeco Tecnologie Acque srl, the Bari-based Italian subsidiary of the German company Wedeco AG Water Technology, obtained an order for its US$ 1.9-million TAK55 HP UV wastewater disinfection system for the Milan water treatment plant.

Wastewater has been mostly discharged into the Lambro River without purification in the last decades, resulting in severe environmental degradation and health problems to those people living in close proximity. For this reason, three new water treatment plants in Milan are being taken into operation.
