Saudi centre rewards water research

Dr. Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh urged conference attendees of Water & Wastewater Europe 2003 to submit nominations for the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water.

Dr. Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh, director of the Prince Sultan Research Center for Environment, Water & Desert at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, urged conference attendees of Water & Wastewater Europe 2003, held in Nice, France on 4-6 March to submit nominations for the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water.

The prize is intended to reward the efforts of innovative scholars and scientific and applied organizations in the realm of water resources worldwide, and to acknowledge special achievements contributing to the development of scientific solutions to the problems associated with the provision and preservation of adequate water resources, particularly in arid regions. The value of the prize is US$ 133,000 (500,000 Saudi Riyals) and will be awarded for five topics:

• Surface water - effective flood control methods;

• Groundwater - artificial groundwater recharge;

• Alternative water resources - economical technologies in seawater desalination;

• Water resource administration - effective new techniques for irrigation water conservation;

• Water resource protection - protection of groundwater from agricultural pollutants.

His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz, who is also Saudi Arabia's Minister of Defence & Aviation, heads the Prize Council.
