USA: The consultancy firm PBS&J will provide comprehensive water quality and biological monitoring (HBMP) services related to two major Tampa Bay Water projects - the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Facility and the Tampa Bypass Canal/Alafia River Water Supply projects.

The team will analyse water quality, seagrasses and fish communities to track any potential impact of ongoing Tampa Bay Water operations in these areas. As prime consultant, PB&J is leading a team of estuarine scientists, data managers, and field technicians to carry out the HPMP programme, which establishes a process used to detect and assess environmental changes. The second project encompasses water quality and biological monitoring programmes for the desalination facility located on the TECO Big Bend Power Plant site. The team will analyse potential effects of discharge from the desalination facility on Apollo Bay and Hillsborough Bay.

USA: The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and PennWell Corporation, a leading publisher in the global water community, formed a partnership to cross market WEFTEC(r), the Federation's annual technical conference and exhibition, and Water & Wastewater Europe (WWE), PennWell's annual event for European water and wastewater industries.

WEFTEC is the largest water quality conference and exhibition in North America and WWE serves a similar purpose for European water professionals. The cross marketing partnership will provide financial incentives for WEF members, conference attendees and exhibitors on both sides of the Atlantic.

Water & Wastewater Europe 2005 will be held in Milan, Italy from 28 to 30 June. Visit the website http://www.wweurope.com for more up-to-date information on the conference and exhibition.

USA: The UK company Dwr Cymru Welsh Water selected Black & Veatch as Preferred Tenderer for its extensive AMP4 programme and beyond, the company announced on 14 October 2004. This 10-year engagement will include delivery of water and wastewater schemes throughout the Welsh Water region. In AMP4 alone, the anticipated value is in excess of US$ 108 million. Black & Veatch worked with Welsh Water in the past five years during AMP3. The consultancy worked in close conjunction with the strategic partnering team made up of mainly specialist engineering and construction companies, formed to deliver around 60% of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's US$ 2.2-billion capital investment programme during 2000-2005.

USA: Bentley Systems, Inc. will grant Haestad Methods software valued at US$ 5 million to colleges and universities with degree programmes in civil and environmental engineering. Haestad Methods water resources product line provides for design, analysis and management of water distribution supply, municipal sanitary sewers, urban stormwater collection, roadway and civil site drainage, and flood control.

Thousands of schools worldwide use this software in their engineering courses in addition to the Haestad Methods textbook "Computer Applications in Hydraulic Engineering."

The software can help supplement water resources courses in many ways. Instructors can create examples of water, sanitary sewer and stormwater networks as part of their courses. Students can design and analyse water resources systems. Instructors and students can present their research at workshops and conferences. Grants are limited and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Send an email to [email protected] or visit the website www.haestad.com/grants/ for more information.
