LOS ANGELES, Calif., Oct. 4, 2002 -- The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the State Department of Health Services have lifted the boil water requirement for residents in the Pacoima/Arleta area. LADWP customers in the area bounded to the north by Paxton Street, to the south by Branford Street, to the west by Canterbury Avenue, and to the east by San Fernando Road, are no longer required to purify their tap water.
"After careful evaluation of this area's water supply by the LADWP and the State Department of Health Services, we're happy to announce that the water has received reliable disinfection treatment since the water outage and is safe to drink," said Gerald Gewe, assistant general manager - water.
According to Gewe, the evaluation was based on water quality testing and monitoring of the bacterial quality and level of disinfection in the system. The boil water advisory was issued as a precautionary measure because of the potential for contamination due to the loss of water pressure in the affected area as a result of a major water trunk line rupture.
Customers who experienced water outages are advised to flush the water lines in their homes for at least 5 minutes or until the water clears at the tap, if they have not already done so.
"Our crews will work around the clock, making extensive repairs to restore this critical water main," said Gewe. "We urge all customers to reduce water use as much as possible throughout the city, especially outdoor uses, for the next week while repairs are being made."
