New York schools now required to test water for lead

NEW YORK, NY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 -- Schools in New York state will now be required to test their drinking water for lead contamination. The requirements were signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Results will be shared with parents and state officals, according to the Associated Press.

Testing at all schools must be completed by October 30. Those buildings that show high lead concentration levels (above 15 parts per billion) will then be required to shut off those water sources and develop a plan to fix the problem before turning the water on again.
