CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, DECEMBER 15, 2016 -- Residents in one Texas town are rushing to buy bottled water after city officials told them to avoid using tap water because of chemical contamination of the water supply.
Anywhere from three to 24 gallons of an asphalt emulsifier called Indulin AA86, believed to have been leaked from a facility in an industrial district, made its way into the Corpus Christi water supply, USA Today reports.
A spokesperson from a city refinery said "a backflow issue from third party operations" caused the leak.
In a statement, a Valero refinery in the city said, "While the City continues to investigate this issue, we do not believe the City's water has been impacted."
The City of Corpus Christi is currently working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has not identified the chemical found in the leak as poisonous.
