National League of Cities supports legislation to improve national water infrastructure

The Water Investment Trust Fund Act, would provide funding to replace, repair and rehabilitate critical wastewater and drinking water infrastructure.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5, 2016 -- Representatives Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), John Duncan (R-TN) and Richard Hanna (R-NY) introduced the Water Investment Trust Fund Act, which would provide funding to replace, repair and rehabilitate critical wastewater and drinking water infrastructure. National League of Cities (NLC) CEO and Executive Director Clarence E. Anthony released the following statement following the bill's introduction:

"Access to clean drinking water is fundamental for the health and well-being of America's communities. Residents suffer when the nation's water infrastructure fails to deliver safe, potable water. Sadly, the residents of Flint, Michigan are currently experiencing the harmful effects of an aging and poorly-maintained water infrastructure system.

"America's cities support the bipartisan legislation introduced by Congressmen Blumenauer, Duncan and Hanna that establishes a clean water trust fund that will support water infrastructure projects critical to our economy, the environment and the health and welfare of our communities. With the growing concern that costly water and wastewater mandates dramatically and disproportionately place a high burden on residents at the lower end of the economic scale, we're pleased the bill also calls for a study to assess the affordability gap of low-income populations.

"The need for water infrastructure funding across the country is critical. We continue to encourage Congress to provide funding for the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA), which would provide long-term, low-interest loans for large water infrastructure projects."

The National League of Cities (NLC) is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
