TORONTO, Oct. 6, 2003 -- Terry Hardy, P. Eng, Chair of Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO), on Monday announced that application guidelines are now available for a graduate scholarship program in support of drinking water research.
"This scholarship is part of the consulting engineering sector's commitment to safe drinking water," said Hardy. "It is also an investment in our future water quality specialists and in future leaders of our profession."
Each year, for the next three years, this program will allow up to two university research programs to hire a graduate student for a period of two years to participate in eligible water quality research programs as selected by Consulting Engineers of Ontario.
Research should recognize the need for practical solutions to assist consulting engineers and municipalities in meeting the need to deliver safe drinking water. Eligible areas of research include analysis, detection and treatment; source water protection; and the economics and management of drinking water infrastructure. "We are very excited about funding research to ensure future generations will have safer drinking water," added Hardy. "This scholarship will provide needed resources for water quality research across Ontario."
In May, Consulting Engineers of Ontario committed $250,000 through the creation of a Water Quality Research Scholarship to support university-led research into the protection and treatment of drinking water. All Ontario universities are eligible to apply for the scholarship funding until Friday, November 21, 2003.
Successful universities will be notified in January 2004 and will have until April 2004 to identify an eligible graduate student to receive the scholarship. Scholarship recipients must commence work on the research during the next academic year. Each scholarship is worth $20,000 per year for two consecutive academic years. In addition, recipients of the scholarship may receive up to $2,000 in expenses for presenting papers directly related to the supported research.
Consulting Engineers of Ontario is a non-profit organization representing the business and professional interests of over 265 consulting engineering firms from across the province.
