Jan. 15, 2001--Weir Westgarth has recently delivered one of its most unusual contracts - a desalination plant to the rain-soaked Scottish islands!
It will be used to produce potable water for ice-making duties at a fish processing plant on the tiny isle of Scalpay, just off Harris.
The 100 m3/daycontainerised reverse osmosis desal plant forms part of a £3.5 million investment being undertaken by Stolt Sea Farm, part of the Scandinavian Stolt-Nielsen Group, which plans to produce around 10,000 tonnes of salmon annually.
The development - supported by Western Isles Enterprise and due to become operational this month - could create a much needed jobs boost for the tiny island.
Alistair Munro, sales director with Weir Westgarth, said: "Vast quantities of fresh water are required to make ice and the plant operators felt they needed one of our plants to provide a guaranteed supply of high quality potable water."
