ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 13, 2001 — NSF International (www.nsf.org ), The Public Health and Safety Company™, has entered into a licensing agreement with the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, Republic of China for the use of NSF Standards for Drinking Water Treatment Units and Drinking Water Additives.
NSF is the world leader in food, water and environment-related certification and education services for public health and safety issues. NSF has over 50 years of experience in the development of nationally- and internationally- recognized public health standards. NSF is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop American National Standards and to provide certification services.
The NSF Standards included in this licensing agreement are ANSI/NSF Standards 42, 44, 53, 55, 58, 61 and 62. Under the agreement, these ANSI/NSF Standards will be used as the foundation for developing Chinese National Standards.
"There is no disagreement in Taiwan that water quality is a serious health issue for many people," commented Congressman Chin-Lin Lai of the Legislative Yuan, R.O.C. "Having standards for the testing and certification of water treatment devices is vitally important to the consumers who must decide which product will provide them with improved water quality."
Amway Taiwan Company Limited is one provider of NSF-Certified water treatment devices in Taiwan. "The growing demand for water treatment devices coincides with the consumers' increased awareness of the potential risk they face with their drinking water supply," commented Martin Liou, General Manager, Amway Taiwan Company Limited. "While we have met the requirements laid out by the NSF Standards, there are many products on the market that have not. By establishing Chinese National Standards similar to those created by NSF, we will help to strengthen the quality of the products in the marketplace and the credibility of our industry."
