According to recent reports, water levels in Lake Okeechobee are expected to fall to the lowest on record this week. Nearly five million people depend on the nation's second largest freshwater lake for drinking water. At this time of year, the average water level should be about 13 feet, but as of Tuesday, it was reported to be at only nine feet -- just millimeters shy of the record low set in 2001 after a prolonged drought...

WEST PALM BEACH, FL, May 30, 2007 -- (Environment News Service) -- According to recent reports, water levels in Lake Okeechobee are expected to fall to the lowest on record this week. Nearly five million people depend on the nation's second largest freshwater lake for drinking water. At this time of year, the average water level should be about 13 feet, but as of Tuesday, it was reported to be at only nine feet -- just millimeters shy of the record low set in 2001 after a prolonged drought.
