Bill would provide funds for victims of toxic water at Camp Lejeune

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC, MARCH 29, 2017 -- A new bill would require the Veterans Administration to provide medical care for diseases linked to exposure to toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune.
The Janey Ensminger Act of 2017 is named in honor of retired Marine Jerry Ensminger's daughter, who was born on base at Camp Lejeune and died from leukemia after being exposed to the water there. The bill would also require a review of results every three years by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, a federal agency within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine any new links between exposure and disease.
A local news station, WWAYTV3, reports well-water at the base was previously contaminated by human carcinogens at Camp Lejeune. This month, the Department of Veteran's Affairs began granting compensation to veterans who served at the base for 30 days or more from 1953 to 1987 and are suffering from a service connected illness.
