N’Djamena water project gets green light with help from EU

CHAD, JAN 24, 2020 -- The Government of Chad has signed an agreement with the European Union to implement water distribution network extension project in the city of N’Djamena.
The agreement was signed between the Chadian Ministers of Environment and Economy and the European Union the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO).
The project is expected to cost up to $60m and will be part of the National Development Programme (NDP) for the period 2017 to 2021.
Upon completion, the project is expected to increase the water supply to about 30 to 45% between now and next year and to about 65% from the period of 2021 to 2025.
The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) was established to manage Lake Chad and address the water scarcity problems. The LCBC is implementing the Interbasin Water Transfer Project (IBWTP) to replenish the Chad lake by building a dam and canals to pump water from the Congo River to the Chari River and then on to Lake Chad.
