MIAMI, FL, July 16, 2007 -- Design work on the new 72-inch raw water pipeline in Miami-Dade County, Fla., has begun. Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. (LAN) was selected by the Miami Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) to provide professional engineering services for the approximately $23 million construction project. The services include feasibility study, general civil engineering related to the water transmission system, and construction phase services. Construction of the water main, estimated to be around 25,000 linear feet, is expected to be completed by 2010.

The proposed raw water pipeline transports raw water from the WASD Northwest Wellfield to the WASD-Preston/Hialeah Water Treatment Plant and extends from the Homestead Extension Florida Turnpike to North West 72nd Avenue, just east of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826). This will serve as a redundant pipeline to the existing 96-inch raw water main running along North West 74th Street Corridor.

"If the existing 96-inch raw water main suffers a pipe damage or failure, repair work could take several weeks to several months to complete, depending on the nature of the pipe," said LAN Miami's Director of Engineering, Rodrigo Pigna, P.E. "This will interrupt the treatment capacity at the Preston/Hialeah plant and also affect the distribution system demands north of Flagler Street. The proposed 72-inch raw water main will provide a critical backup should this potential risk occur."

Other large diameter main projects LAN has recently worked on include:
• City of Houston 72-inch and 60-inch Transmission Mains
• City of Galveston Rehabilitation of 1,984LF of 30-inch Transmission Main
• Design of 60-inch Force Main in Miami-Dade County
