Unsafe lead, copper levels found in water at half of Detroit schools

DETROIT, MI, SEPT 21, 2018 -- Unsafe levels of lead or copper have been found at more than half of Detroit Public Schools Community District buildings, the Associated Press reports.

Tests of drinking fountains and other fixtures showed show elevated levels in 57 schools in the district, with results still pending for 17 more.

The problems follow a lead-tainted water crisis in the city, where corrosive river water in 2014 and 2015 caused lead in old pipes to contaminate water in homes and businesses.

Water coolers were installed and bottled water have been provided to students at all Detroit schools since the beginning of this school year.
