EBMUD implements corrosion control measures in distribution system

California's East Bay Municipal Utility District selects BlueInGreen to fortify its corrosion control measures as part of its ongoing leadership in California and in the water treatment industry.

EBMUD has a proud history of providing high-quality drinking water to 1.4 million customers in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Their mission—to provide reliable, high-quality water and wastewater services for the people of the East Bay, and to preserve and protect the environment for future generations—is guided by the principles of responsible financial management and environmental, economic and social sustainability.

In conjunction with their local California representative, JBI Water & Wastewater, BlueInGreen worked closely with EBMUD to determine the appropriate system designs to achieve the District's corrosion control objectives within their water distribution system. BlueInGreen will supply 11 of their duplex CDOX® CO₂ gas-dissolution systems at the four project sites as part of EBMUD’s long-term corrosion control strategy—a proactive, preventative measure to mitigate corrosion.

In choosing BlueInGreen’s CDOX® CO₂ gas-dissolution systems, EBMUD continues to lead the way in proactive thinking and sound corrosion control practices. These efforts protect the Utility’s infrastructure.

“Water from many sources is naturally corrosive,” said BlueInGreen President and CEO Chris Milligan, PE. “Both surface water and groundwater in areas without significant carbonate rock may corrode piping instead of protecting it with scale from naturally occurring minerals. One of the most common solutions is to simultaneously add lime and carbon dioxide to buffer the water naturally.”

Indeed, the reservoirs supplying EBMUD can be slightly corrosive if the snowmelt from the Sierras has not accumulated sufficient minerals naturally. The Utility District’s proactive corrosion control measures—using state-of-the-art CDOX® CO₂ gas-dissolution equipment and lime—support the EBMUD’s mission to provide reliable, high-quality water to its communities.

“Drinking water providers around the country have been increasing their focus on corrosion control over the last few years,” said Milligan. “We’re grateful for the award from the East Bay Municipal Utility District and excited to contribute to the Utility’s leadership position, mission and sustainability objectives. BlueInGreen’s CDOX® systems, alongside ongoing water testing and the District’s other proactive measures, will minimize the potential risk of any corrosion related concerns to the community’s drinking water.”

BlueInGreen is leading the industry-wide trend of replacing chemicals, polymers and ambient air with oxygen, carbon dioxide and ozone. In doing so, the Company is empowering water professionals to achieve their treatment objectives with the lowest combination of risk and costs while driving enhanced outcomes for people, communities and the planet.
