NASHVILLE, TN, May 2, 2005 -- Smith Seckman Reid Inc. (SSR), a Nashville, Tenn.-based engineering design and facility consulting firm, is playing a key role in the planning and construction of a new water treatment plant in Alcoa, Tenn.
The city of Alcoa recently broke ground for the project, which will be constructed on 10 acres of land off Sam Houston Schoolhouse Road adjacent to the existing treatment plant. Construction is expected to take about two years.
"The new plant utilizes membrane filtration technology to provide the best quality drinking water for the city's customers," said Mike Bernard, SSR project manager. "The plant is fully automated, which will provide the city with increased efficiency, operations and security with the capacity to expand to producing 24 million gallons of water per day."
The engineering firm drafted the report recommending construction of the new plant, assisted the city of Alcoa in selecting the new plant site and procured a membrane filtration system, which will help the plant exceed all current and pending Environmental Protection Agency standards.
SSR has provided engineering services including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and instrumentation and process control design. Architects International in Knoxville is responsible for architectural services, while W. Rogers Company is the general contractor.
The Nashville company is now the primary contact responsible for construction administration, which will be managed by its personnel and a resident project representative in a new Knoxville field office. SSR and Architects International will provide structural and architectural support during construction.
