A Thai government cabinet screening committee endorsed plans for a dam that will cost more than US$90 million in a bid to end water shortages in Lampang province.

The construction of the US$ 93-million Kiew Khaw Ma dam was scheduled to begin in 2005, and expected to be completed in 2009. The dam will flood farmland spread over 1,195 rai of tambon Pong Don, Chae Hom district, and approximately US$ 19.8 million would be set aside to expropriate land and compensate up to 324 local farmers.

Aside from storing water for agricultural, industrial and public consumption, the dam would also supply the Mae Moh lignite-fired power plant. Several ministries in cooperation with the Irrigation Department, which would oversee construction, proposed the dam project.
