May 9, 2002 -- Workers have pulled the second body from hardening concrete in an Atlanta sewer shaft collapse that killed two and injured six.
Scaffolding holding several workers collapsed while construction workers were pouring concrete for a 200-foot deep sewer shaft when the scaffolding tore away from the inner wall, sending the workers plummeting 70 feet into wet concrete.
A fire department spokesman said the collapse involved construction materials and forms used to support the sides of the vertical sewer shaft, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported (http://www.accessatlanta.com/ajc).
About 180,000 pounds of concrete fell on the workers who were killed, the newspaper reported.
Of the six other men who survived the accident, two were hospitalized but in stable condition Thursday.
Ironically, the Cobb County Trench Rescue Squad routinely trained at the site of the accident and had a drill planned for Thursday. The rescue itself took 40 public safety personnel.
The construction workers were employed by Archer Western Contractors. OSHA is investigating the accident.
