NORTHERN NEW JERSEY, Nov. 27, 2000 (The Record)—A construction worker was crushed Wednesday by a 3-ton metal box while he worked in a sewer trench in South Brunswick, police said.
Antonio Alves, 41, was in critical condition Thursday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, a nursing supervisor said.
Specific details of his injuries were not available.
Alves was working in the enclosed metal shoring box when, at about 12:20 p.m., he left to go work in another section of the trench. An unidentified worker, who was unaware of Alves location, moved the metal box and crushed Alves against the trench wall, police said.
The Monmouth Junction Fire Department responded and, using a special trench-rescue tool, were able to extricate Alves, police said.
The construction site has been closed pending an investigation by municipal staff and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Alves was working on the project for Stacey Contracting of River Edge.
