MARKHAM, Ill., Aug. 4, 2003 - Kenny Construction Company, a licensee of Inliner Technologies LLC, has begun renewal of 5,735 feet of sewer pipe in the suburban Chicago city of Markham for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

Kenny Construction will install Paoli-based Inliner Technologies' method of cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) to renew a section of the city's 18-inch force main near I-294 and 161st Street on the city's northeast side. The project, which is valued at approximately $1.17 million, is expected to be complete by October.

"Force main projects require using modified vinyl ester resin, rather than the standard polyester resin," said Ed Kampbell, vice president and general manager of Inliner Technologies. "Modified vinyl ester resins are more capable of bearing the tensile load from the constant surges of pressure found in a force main system. Traditional thermosets are rigid, and are therefore subject to failure under these cyclical force variations."

Ralph Bonanotte, general manager of Kenny Inliner, is overseeing the project for Kenny Construction. "Installation techniques also differ with force main projects when the pipes have bends," said Bonanotte.

"The liner tube is straight, so when it is installed, the lining material is stretched on the outside of the bend, and gathers on the inside--causing the wall to be wrinkled," he explained. "To eliminate this issue, we have chosen to utilize the bends as access points for lining installation. We're lining the straight sections, putting in end seals, and then replacing the bends with new coated ones."

About CIPP

CIPP technology allows for the rehabilitation of damaged underground wastewater and storm sewer pipe without excavating. The process reduces noise, traffic disturbance, and road damage - and can be done in a shorter time frame and for less cost than replacing existing lines. With Inliner's method, a felt tube - saturated with resin and coated with a waterproof layer - is inserted into the pipe. Hot water is circulated through the tube, which hardens the resin. This material serves as a barrier between the damaged pipe and the wastewater that flows through it, or as a new stand-alone pipeline.
