ALEXANDRIA, VA, Nov. 18, 2003 -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to solicit technical assistance in the development of guidance materials for wastewater and stormwater infrastructure security concerns.
Development of this guidance is part of a more comprehensive project to develop Security Guidance Documents for Water and Wastewater Infrastructure, a joint effort between WEF, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Water Works Association (AWWA).
As the leading educational organization for water quality professionals, agencies, and companies, the Federation is responsible for developing materials related to wastewater and stormwater.
WEF is requesting submissions from qualified contractors who present an innovative approach to the development of a stand-alone guidance document that addresses the reduction of risk to wastewater and stormwater infrastructure arising from malevolent events and natural disasters.
The document will provide guidance for wastewater collection and treatment and stormwater management infrastructure to include design, construction, operation, and maintenance considerations.
Since early 2002, the Federation has been working with the EPA to train water and wastewater utilities to identify and prioritize security concerns, conduct vulnerability assessments, and develop security plans.
WEF and others have recognized the unique security concerns related to wastewater and stormwater infrastructure and plans to address these concerns through an intense and broadly-based collaborative effort to develop consensus on best security design and operational practices.
