Dec. 23, 2003 -- The United Nations University (UNU) recently launched its Virtual Learning Center for Water (VLCW) which will provide distance learning opportunities and information on best water management practices for developing countries.

Starting in 2004, the VLCW will offer a "Diploma in Integrated Water Resources Management" distance learning course. The 250-hour programme is CD-ROM based and Internet-supported, consisting of 10 modules covering water transfer, aquatic ecosystems, water use, wastewater, governance and community-based approaches, and organisational infrastructure and management.

The curriculum is designed as an undergraduate course for adult professionals. It will be adapted to regional training needs and offered through affiliated institutions in Africa, Asia and the South Pacific, eventually expanding worldwide.

"Spin-off" courses are planned for non-water professionals, including policy makers, and for advanced water specialists. The UNU International Network on Water, Environment and Health (INWEH) developed the course over three years with US$ 1.6 million (EUR 1.3 million) from the UN Development Account with the help of 60 academics and professionals from universities, government and UN agencies.
