MONTREAL, Aug. 8, 2001 — SNC-Lavalin International Inc. has been awarded a C$58 million contract to restore 26 km of a conveyance pipeline transporting crucial water supplies to the city of Benghazi, and other regions along the fertile coastal strip of Libya.
The contract between the Canadian-based construction and engineering company and the Management and Implementation Authority of the Great Man-Made River Project, Libya,(GMRA) calls for the restoration of approximately 3 500 pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipes along the Sarir-Sirt/Tazerbo-Benghazi conveyance lines.
"The contract follows five years of intensive work undertaken by our company for this prestigious River Project," said Sami B�wi, Executive Vice- President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. "Once completed, it will transport over six million cubic metres of water per day for agricultural development and human consumption."
In conclusion, B�wi said, "In light of the recent announcement by Ottawa that it plans to open an embassy in Tripoli shortly, we are pleased to be in the vanguard of construction work for this massive project which will ultimately ensure a reliable water supply for the country."
