Montgomery Watson wins large sewage upgrade design/build project for Sydney Water

Sydney Water Corporation in New South Wales has awarded Montgomery Watson Constructors a design/build contract to support BNR upgrades at West Hornsby and Hornsby Heights Sewage Treatment Plants.

SYDNEY, Australia, January 24, 2001 — Sydney Water Corporation, Australia's primary water and wastewater provider for New South Wales, has awarded Montgomery Watson Constructors (Australia) a major design/build contract to support Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) Upgrades at West Hornsby and Hornsby Heights Sewage Treatment Plants (STP).

The A$22 million is the largest of its kind awarded this past year by Sydney Water Corporation. Located in Northern Sydney within the Hornsby Shire, the West Hornsby plant serves approximately 60,000 people while the nearby Hornsby Heights plants serves approximately 30,000 people.

The BNR upgrade is key to helping both facilities meet effluent quality requirements, reduce environmental impacts within the Berowra Creek Catchment and increase sewage treatment capacity.

As prime contractor, Montgomery Watson and its 50-50 joint venture partner, Transfield, one of Australia's largest infrastructure providers, will undergo both plant upgrades simultaneously and concurrently to meet tight deadlines.

Efforts include the design development, detail design, construction, commissioning and defects maintenance at the two sewage treatment plants. As brown field sites, West Hornsby and Hornsby Heights will present significant construction methodology challenges to the joint venture team to maintain Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Montgomery Watson, Inc. is a private, employee-owned firm with over 4,500 employees worldwide. The company provides engineering design, procurement, construction, technology, and program management services to the markets of the Americas, Europe, Middle East, India, Asia and the Pacific Rim.
