VALLEY FORGE, PA, March 6, 2008 -- About 30,000 feet of 4-inch and 6-inch Certa-Lok™ Yelomine™ PVC pipe, by CertainTeed, is being used as part of a temporary above-ground irrigation system project that is restoring 120 acres of land in Walnut Hills, Calif., near Los Angeles, to return native plant species to the area.
The project, which is expected to take about five years, began last summer and involves the reintroduction of native southern California plant species, such as the California sage, toyon, laurel sumac, oak and walnut trees and coffeeberry. Labeled the Walnut Hills Habitat Mitigation, it is a form of land restoration required by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to return land to its natural condition as mitigation for a proposed housing development. Builder Standard Pacific Homes Inc. plans to develop the adjacent land for housing.
Standard Pacific hired native habitat restoration contractor Nakae & Associates Inc., of Irvine, Calif., to remove non-indigenous plant life from the land and reintroduce indigenous plants. Nakae & Associates are using the Yelomine pipe as a temporary above-ground mainline, which feeds water to the lateral lines of the overhead irrigation system. The contractor will water and cultivate the various plants for the next two to three years and the plants will be maintained for another two years, once the irrigation systems are removed. The Yelomine was purchased from the Irvine branch of John Deere Landscapes ®, the nation's largest distributor of nursery, irrigation, outdoor lighting, landscape supplies, fertilizers, turf protection products, grass seed and turf care equipment.
Nakae & Associates chose Yelomine pipe for its temporary mainline because of the product's easy assembly, which speeds up operations.
"One of the best things about Yelomine is that we can easily disassemble it, move it to the next site and set up a new temporary mainline there," says Kevin Kirchner, Vice President and General Manager of Nakae & Associates. "It's been working really well for us. We used to use 4-inch rubber hose material for this application, but the Yelomine pipe has been a big improvement."
