MINNEAPOLIS, MN, June 16, 2008 -- The American Filtration Separation Society has announced Dr. Irwin Pikus will be its Keynote Speaker at the Gala Banquet at its Fall Conference September 23-25th at the Hilton University Place Hotel in Charlotte, NC.

Dr. Pikus is former Commissioner of the President's Commission of Critical Infrastructure Protection where he led five major divisions. Dr. Pikus holds a PhD in Physics and a J.D. in law. He currently serves on the EPA's water security council and has led the ASCE's subcommittee on Methodology and Characterization of water security systems focusing primarily on early warning of water contamination. In his presentation, Dr. Pikus will address the strengths and benefits the nation derives from its infrastructures and discuss some of the major risks they now face.

The American Filtration Separations Society (AFS) Fall Conference will consist of two Tracks, a Workshop and 8 one-half and full day Short Courses on a variety of filtration topics including session on Microporous and Ultrafiltration Membranes and Water Treatment and Sludge Dewatering. Track I of the Conference is titled Infrastructure Sustainability; Filtration's Growth Market, Underscoring America's Most Critical Un-Met Needs in Filtration and is organized by Edward C. Gregor. Track II is titled Filtration Testing; Procedures, Evaluation and Validation and is organized by Dr. Ernest Mayer of DuPont. The Workshop is titled Water and Air Infrastructure Needs and the Role of Filtration in the Interdependency Market and is chaired by Anita K. Highsmith, former Head of Water Activities at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA.

Said Ed Gregor, Chairman for the Fall Conference "In the Infrastructure Sustainability Track, the AFS is taking a different tack and has invited organizations and individuals having a broad overview and perspective to address the most compelling filtration and/or separation Un-Met needs in their area of expertise. The industry has never offered a forum of this nature. The idea is to provide a peek under the tent and jump-start innovation and sustainability thinking where it has lagged and accelerate development where it's on-going. We are especially delighted to have Dr. Pikus as our Keynote Gala Banquet speaker."
