HARRISBURG, PA, Oct. 14, 2008 -- A Lancaster County developer was issued an $18,500 civil penalty by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection today after failing to reduce erosion at its construction sites.

Custom Home Group's failure to take the appropriate steps to reduce erosion and sedimentation run-off by installing a silt fence and securing soil after excavation violated the state's Clean Streams Law.

"Following 15 inspections at four subdivisions from April 2005 to December 2007, department investigators determined the Quarryville-based contractor's failure to control construction run-off endangered the health of vital Lancaster waterways," said DEP Southcentral Regional Office Director Rachel Diamond.

Sediment pollution from Little Britain Township's Boor and Wayne Coe subdivisions, Colerain Township's Benjamin E. Siegrist subdivision, and Fulton Township's Cameron's Knoll subdivision threatened Reynolds Run, Ball Run and the Conowingo Creek.

Custom Homes paid an initial $5,000 and will continue to make monthly payments to DEP's Clean Water Fund, which is used to fund cleanups across the state.
