FOFANNY, Northern Ireland, July 15, 2008 -- Northern Ireland Water and global engineering company Earth Tech have scooped a fourth construction award for their ground-breaking Fofanny Water Treatment Works project.
The £18m scheme in Fofanny, Northern Ireland is known best for its unique underground design. It won the top award for Innovation in Sustainable Build and Design at the recent Showcase Build and Design Awards.
Organised in conjunction with Specify Magazine, the leading magazine for the construction industry in Northern Ireland, the aim of the inaugural awards was to celebrate Northern Ireland's exceptional and innovative talent in design and build.
The contract was carried out by a joint venture partnership between Earth Tech Engineering Ltd and Farrans (Construction) Ltd. Architectural and landscape design consultants for the project were McAdam Design.
Tony White, Earth Tech Managing Director Europe, said: "Winning a fourth award for the Fofanny Water Treatment Works confirms the project's phenomenal success. We have worked hard to ensure the sustainability of the project and to consider all environmental implications. We're delighted that our eco-friendly design has again been recognised."
Commenting on the achievement, Paul Davison, NI Water project sponsor said: "We are delighted to receive this award. This accolade is a fitting tribute to the design innovations, sustainable construction best practices and strong team spirit that was instilled throughout the design and build period of the Fofanny project."
Fofanny Water Treatment Works was designed to treat over 50 million litres of water a day, ensuring over 100,000 consumers across South Down and parts of Armagh receive the highest quality drinking water.
Last year the Fofanny project beat off stiff competition to scoop the prestigious Environment Award at the 2007 Utility Industry Achievement Awards.
Previously the project won the National Gold Award for Public Facilities in the 2007 Green Apple Awards. When the new works were first commissioned, Fofanny took first prize in the Achieving Excellence in the Public Sector category of the 2006 Construction Employers Federation/Specify Construction Excellence Awards.
