VOORHEES, NJ, Nov. 5, 2009 -- American Water Works Company Inc., the largest investor-owned U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that John Young, President of American Water Services and American Water Works Service Company, has been elected to serve as Chairman of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for 2010. Young has been a DBIA board member for five years, most recently as Treasurer. This year, he also chaired the organization's strategic planning task force. The gavel will be passed to Young at the Institute's annual Design-Build Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., on November 7, 2009.

Young was instrumental in galvanizing support behind a new DBIA mission, vision, and strategy. Approved by the board at the 2009 annual conference, that mission reinforces DBIA's commitment to design-build project delivery and to teaching the effective integration of design and construction services.

Young began his career with American Water in 1977 and has held a variety of executive positions, including chief operating officer, vice president of Operations and Investment Performance, and vice president of Engineering. He was appointed to his current position in September 2008.

In addition to DBIA, Young is an active member of several other professional organizations. He is a member of the board of American Water Works Association and belongs to the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has also served on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Drinking Water Advisory Council and several EPA working groups.

A registered professional engineer in a number of states, Mr. Young holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Duke University, and a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina.
