• CH2M HILL served as program manager for the innovative project
ZURICH, Switzerland, Apr. 28, 2009 -- PUB Singapore's Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) was named water project of the year during the Global Water Awards ceremony hosted by the International Desalination Association and Global Water Intelligence. Chief Executive Mr. Khoo Teng Chye received the award from Mr. Joaquin Fernandez de Pierola Marin, Business Development and Investments Division International Director of BEFESA Auga. The awards presented in Zurich on Apr. 27 recognize outstanding achievements within the international water industry.
CH2M HILL, a global full-service engineering, procurement, construction, and operations firm, has been working with the PUB Singapore since 1997 to conceptualise, manage and integrate the planning, design, and construction of one of the largest used water collection and treatment projects ever undertaken globally. The DTSS is a major step toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of Singapore's water resources.
Phase 1 of the DTSS was completed in 2008 and comprises a 48km-long deep tunnel, a centralised water reclamation plant, a network of link sewers and a deep-sea outfall. CH2MHill played a critical role in the successful completion of this mega project by assuming the leadership role in:
(i) the feasibility study and preliminary design of the entire DTSS which serves the entire country's used water needs for the next 100 years;
(ii) the programme management of the 48km long North Tunnel which was completed in 2006. The tunnel diameter was up to 6m and was built at a depth of up to 55 metres below ground, using trenchless technology;
(iii) programme manager, lead design firm and construction manager of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant (WRP), which was completed in 2008. The plant will initially treat 800,000m3/d of gravity-fed used water from the North Tunnel. It is mainly built underground, and its compact design means it occupies less than a third of the area needed for a conventional layout. The treated effluent will be discharged to the sea or used to produce NEWater at a plant built on the roof of the Changi WRP.
"DTSS has already vastly improved the nation's infrastructure and its ability to support the growing population, industrialization and continued urbanization into the next century," says CH2M HILL Water Business Group President Bob Bailey. "Singapore is an excellent example of how a country has taken a holistic approach to sustainable water management," adds Bailey.
From June 22 to June 26, Singapore will share its expertise when it plays host to the world's water leaders at its second annual Singapore International Water Week. CH2M HILL is a founding sponsor of the event. Nearly 10,000 water professionals and elected officials from around the globe will address challenges, showcase technologies, discover opportunities and celebrate achievements in the water world. The Singapore International Water Week's Water Convention will be held alongside with the International Water Association's Leading-Edge Technology (LET) Conference from June 23 to June 25.
Headquartered near Denver, Colo., employee-owned CH2M HILL is a global leader in engineering, procurement, construction, management and operations for government, civil, industrial and energy clients.
