• City of Springfield embarks on ambitious GIS and modeling project with support of MWH Soft

BROOMFIELD, CO, Apr. 22, 2009 -- MWH Soft, a leading global provider of environmental and water resources applications software, today announced that City Water, Light and Power (CWLP) in Springfield, Illinois, has chosen MWH Soft's industry-leading InfoWater Suite software as its advanced water distribution modeling and design solution. The selection underscores the value of the company's GIS-centric hydraulic infrastructure modeling and design solutions -- products that have made MWH Soft the market leader in North America. Among the reasons cited for the city's decision were the software's many powerful tools, comprehensive functionality, computational speed, ease of use, flexibility, and seamless ArcGIS (ESRI, Redlands, CA) integration.

CWLP supplies domestic water for more than 150,000 people in the Springfield, IL metropolitan area and provides wholesales service to several adjacent communities. Its distribution systems comprise Lake Springfield, a lakeside water purification plant, an elevated storage tank, and over 650 miles (1,046 km) of water mains.

In January 2009, CWLP began a year-long project to map and collect data on its water distribution infrastructure. Crews using handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) technology are mapping 5,000 hydrants, 16,000 valves, and 52,000 meter pits. A primary goal of this project to is build an updated hydraulic model of the system using the InfoWater Suite software. Other goals for the project include improved maintenance plans and response times for emergency repairs, greater customer notification capabilities, and better coordination with the Springfield Fire Department on available flow data for any given hydrant. All data collected will be added to the CWLP layers of a regional GIS that will be used by CWLP and other agencies.

Tom Skelly, Water Division Manager at CWLP, explains, "InfoWater gives us the advanced hydraulic modeling tools we need to better manage our water infrastructure. The ability to directly access the regional GIS from the software facilitates the most efficient workflows possible, and ensures our ability to build and maintain accurate models with the least amount of effort. Our primary mission is to ensure that all our customers have a safe and plentiful water supply, both in the immediate future and over the long term. InfoWater is a key element in helping us to further those goals."

The innovative network modeling technology of the InfoWater Suite addresses every facet of utility infrastructure management, optimization and protection -- delivering the highest rate of return in the industry. Built atop ArcGIS and drawing on the most advanced numerical computation and object-component geospatial technologies, it effortlessly reads GIS datasets; corrects network topology problems and data flaws; extracts pertinent modeling information; and automatically constructs, skeletonizes, loads, calibrates and generates optimized solutions with astounding speed. The result is performance modeling that sets new levels of scalability, reliability, functionality and flexibility within the powerful ArcGIS environment. Using these advanced tools, utilities can easily simulate and evaluate various conditions, pinpoint system deficiencies, and determine the most cost-effective improvements to achieve optimum performance and regulatory compliance, and meet new security challenges.

Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., MWH Soft President and COO, said his company is thrilled to work with CWLP and be part of this critical infrastructure project. "We're committed to supporting their mission and helping them achieve new levels of productivity and efficiency by providing a full range of world-class, market-leading engineering GIS modeling and design solutions," he said. "Our pioneering ArcGIS-centric solutions have a clear advantage in the marketplace, helping our progressive customers meet strategic goals, raise quality standards, improve overall system performance and reliability, and forge closer ties with customers -- while enjoying maximum cost savings. We are proud to continue leading the way in advanced engineering GIS software applications for the global water and wastewater industries."

MWH Soft is a leading global provider of technical and infrastructure software and professional solutions designed to meet the technological needs of utilities, government industries, and engineering organizations worldwide.
