HARRISBURG, PA, Oct. 23 -- Residents in 16 counties will have better drinking water and improved management of storm runoff and wastewater because of the $68.9 million investment Governor Edward G. Rendell announced was approved today by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, or PENNVEST.

"Residents and businesses need good infrastructure for their communities to survive and thrive," Governor Rendell said. "This is especially true for water-related infrastructure. By approving the grants and low-interest loans that it did today, the PENNVEST Board made another significant contribution to the health and well being of Pennsylvania's infrastructure, and its citizens."

Most of the money approved today, $63.9 million, is in the form of low-interest loans. Combined with $5 million in grants, PENNVEST will fund 21 clean water projects.

The awards approved by PENNVEST range from a $727,000 loan to construct new stormwater management facilities for a community in Luzerne County to a $10.3 million loan and grant combination that will eliminate the contamination of a river in Fayette County caused by malfunctioning on-lot septic systems.

Funds for the projects are disbursed after bills for work are paid and the receipts are submitted to PENNVEST for reimbursement.
