RICHMOND, VA, Feb. 12, 2007 -- CH2M Hill, a global full-service engineering, construction, and operations firm received the Honor Award at the 2007 Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia (ACEC/VA) for its work on the Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant. The project will now compete at a national level.
CH2M Hill provided design and construction management services to Chesapeake, VA, for this state-of-the-art treatment plant, allowing the city to meet current and future regulations. CH2M Hill completed a pilot study and conceptual design study showing that ultrafiltration (UF) membrane treatment provided superior particle removal and enhanced treatment at a cost comparable to conventional or microfiltration treatment.
Commissioned in March 2006, Lake Gaston is the first submerged membrane plant in Virginia. The plant currently produces eight million gallons per day (mgd) of high quality drinking water that exceeds Virginia Department of Health requirements. The plant is designed to treat multiple water qualities and it is easily expandable to 20 mgd in the future. The $28.5 million project was completed in 29 months, well within the City's schedule constraints.
ACEC is a federation of 51 state and regional councils representing 6,000 independent engineering companies throughout the United States engaged in the development of America's transportation, environmental, industrial and other infrastructure. The Engineering Excellence Awards recognize significant engineering achievement.
