Illinois American Water has issued $4.7 million in bill credits to customers following the company's receipt of settlement proceeds from PFAS manufacturers.

The utility applied a $15.02 credit on Aug. 10 to all active water customer accounts as of June 30, 2026. The latest distribution brings the total amount returned to eligible customers through PFAS-related settlements to $24.9 million.

Previous distributions included $17 million in November 2025 and $3.2 million in February 2026. Customers whose accounts were active during all three distributions have received a total of $82.40 per account.

The credits are being provided under Illinois Commerce Commission approval of Illinois American Water's PFAS Litigation Universal Credit Rider, which allows the utility to return settlement proceeds directly to customers. The credits are not based on PFAS concentrations in individual customers' water.

Separately, Illinois American Water said it has completed PFAS treatment upgrades in several communities and plans to invest approximately $92 million through 2029 to expand PFAS treatment across multiple water systems in the state.
