Nitrification testing
Respirometry Plus offers two new tests to determine if influents are toxic to nitrifiers. The tests have been developed by the company for use with its Arthur Bench Respirometer and are designed to help maintain nitrification process control. The tests produce results in less than 20 minutes. For process control, the respirometer measures separately, but simultaneously, the amount of oxygen used in nitrogenous oxidation and the amount used in carbonaceous oxidation.

Temperature measurement
Dwyer Instruments offers the Series MIL mini In-Line IR Sensor for temperature monitoring. The two-piece system consists of a miniature sensing head and separate electronics. The sensor is small enough to be installed just about anywhere. The electronics feature emissivity, peak hold, valley hold and averaging function, all of which are adjustable on the 5-digit LCD user interface.

pH recorder

Monitoring system

Data retrieval device
Water level data, collected using dedicated Solinst Leveloggers, can now be retrieved without taking a laptop computer into the field. An inexpensive new hand-held device, the Leveloader, downloads up to 190,000 measurements from up to 50 Leveloggers. Back in the office, the data can be transferred to the office computer. The Levelogger is an accurate, miniature unit with a pressure transducer, temperature sensor, 10-year battery and datalogger all factory sealed in a maintenance-free stainless steel housing.

Gas monitoring

TPH analysis monitoring
FCI Environmental has introduced its CMS-4000 Continuous Monitoring System to monitor stormwater and wastewater for TPH analysis. Using the company's patented Fiber Optic Chemical Sensor (FOCS®) technology, the system provides trend data and control capability through a 4-20 mA output, as well as being compatible with most commercial SCADA systems. Data correlates well with the Freon/IR method without the need for Freon solvents and is available locally and via modem. The system is intrinsically safe and can simultaneously handle up to four separate sample streams, each with its own 4-20 mA output.

Chorine testing
The Idexx EZ DPD dispenser is designed for residual chlorine testing. It allows sample collectors to dispense a pre-measured dose of reagent with the press of a button, eliminating messy powder handling and leftover foil pouches. Refill vials screw on quickly. The testers work with a wide range of color cubes, color wheels and colorimeters. Color-coding distinguishes free and total chlorine tests.

Gas monitoring
Hydro Instruments' GA-170 gas monitoring system detects trace quantities of toxic gases and alerts operating personnel through built-in audible and visual alarms. The monitors can be used to detect chlorine, sulfur dioxide and various other gases with one or two sensors per monitor. Magnetic flow meter
Siemens Energy & Automation has released a new version of the Sitrans FM magnetic flow meter that provides the additional capability of digital communications using Profibus PA, profile 3. Some of the unit's new features include: Internal simulation for all output functions, as well as complete flow simulation; Automatic self-monitoring of the converter and the connected flow sensor; and Automatic recognition of the sensor type and calibration data as result of the SmartPlug memory chip. When used with Simatic PDM software, the flow meter can be integrated directly into a complete Profibus system, so the flow data is available at the control system.

Water monitoring
Utilities can monitor water for months with the new YSI 6600 EDS (Extended Deployment System).
