NAPERVILLE, IL, Sept. 21, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- With Hurricane Rita already the third strongest on record and 1.3 million people told to evacuate the area, Nalco Holding Co. has begun shutting down operations at its manufacturing plants in Freeport, Texas -- near Galveston -- and Sugar Land, Texas, outside Houston.

Production will be affected at least through this weekend at both plants. The ability to restart production will depend on the path of the hurricane as well as the availability of electricity, raw materials and the transportation network in the area after the storm passes. Nalco's Energy Services division offices and research facility located at the Sugar Land plant will also be closed at least through this weekend.

Nalco (www.nalco.com) is a leading provider of integrated water treatment and process improvement services, chemicals and equipment programs for industrial and institutional applications. The company currently serves more than 60,000 customer locations representing a broad range of end markets. It has established a global presence with over 10,000 employees operating in 130 countries, supported by a comprehensive network of manufacturing facilities, sales offices and research centers. In 2004, Nalco achieved sales of more than $3 billion.
