COVINGTON, KY, Feb. 17, 2005 -- The Northern Kentucky Sanitation District No. 1, with project assistance from Woolpert Inc., was recently awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2004 National Clean Water Act Recognition Award for its outstanding municipal stormwater management program.

The district was recognized for its outstanding technological achievements and innovative processes related to its new stormwater utility that encompasses 34 municipalities in Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties, as well as the three counties themselves.

Since 1998, Woolpert has provided water resource engineering, surveying, GIS and information technology services to this Midwest sanitation district. Through numerous project phases, Woolpert helped it develop the regional stormwater program, inventory its infrastructure assets, develop a database of stormwater structures, create a capital improvement plan, submit a regional NPDES Phase II permit application and establish a stormwater billing utility -- which was successfully implemented on August 1, 2003.

"In the case of the district and the counties and municipalities of northern Kentucky, this six-year journey began with a vision that was shared by an agency and local leaders who were willing to do things differently to more efficiently meet the needs of their citizens. This award is a well-deserved stop on the journey that will see the District and northern Kentucky taking other innovative steps to improve the environment for all the area's citizens," Woolpert project director Bill Spearman explained.

"The district is very excited to have received the USEPA award for the outstanding municipal stormwater management program. We strive every day to address the water quality and quantity needs of the northern Kentucky region and to deliver an effective and efficient program to our citizens. It is nice to be recognized for these efforts! Woolpert has been very instrumental in helping the District develop its stormwater program. It has truly been a joint effort, and we value our relationship with Woolpert," stated John Lyons, district director of stormwater management.

The award was presented to the District at the Water Environment Federation's (WEFTEC) Annual Technical Exposition and Conference in New Orleans, La.

Based in Dayton, Ohio, but with offices across the country, Woolpert Inc. (www.woolpert.com), is a professional engineering and architecture consulting firm. Ranked by ENR as a top national design firm, it provides expertise in facility design and management, GIS, photogrammetry, planning and design, site/civil design, surveying/GPS, transportation and water management.
