The recent addition of estrogen to the National Toxicology Program's (USA) list of cancer-causing agents has again put the spotlight on endocrine-disrupting chemicals in water sources.

The recent addition of estrogen to the National Toxicology Program's (USA) list of cancer-causing agents has again put the spotlight on endocrine-disrupting chemicals in water sources, a topic that will be examined at the Third International Conference on Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Water, to be held 19-21 March in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The National Ground Water Association (www.ngwa.org), the organiser of the event, will gather top researchers from around the world to share their findings on assessment and impacts of these chemicals' presence in water supplies. Evaluations of human health impacts and up-to-date assessments on the extent of contamination from the US Geological Survey will be presented.

Thomas Heberer of the Technical University of Berlin will deliver the conference keynote address entitled "Occurrence, Fate, Assessment and Removal of Pharmaceuticals in the Aquatic Environments: A European Point of View."

Co-sponsors of the event include the US Environmental Protection Administration National Risk Management Research Laboratory, the US Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program, the Technical University of Berlin, the Competence Centre Water Berlin, and Brown Cancer Centre at the University of Louisville.
