The SingSpring Desalination Plant at Tuas is Singapore's first seawater desalination plant and it meets some 10% of the nation's water needs, supplying some 136,380 m3 of potable water per day. The plant adopts reverse osmosis technology that uses semi–permeable membranes.

Hyflux developed SingSpring Desalination Plant under a 20–year design, build, own, operate and transfer (DBOOT) arrangement with PUB. Construction of the plant commenced in January 2004 and the plant was completed some three months ahead of schedule.

The SingSpring Desalination Plant has a number of distinct qualities, such as:

• The largest RO seawater desalination plant in the tropics

• One of the largest single RO trains in the world

• One of the most energy efficient desalination plants in the world

The plant was Singapore's first public–private partnership initiative. The project financing deal was awarded the Euromoney Asia Pacific Water Deal of the Year in 2003. This award sets a new benchmark in terms of scope as well as complexity of execution in the growing market of privately financed water projects.

The SingSpring Desalination Plant also won Distinction at the Global Water Awards 2006. The Judges' Verdict at the Global Water Awards 2006 said: "The Tuas plant is a brilliant work of engineering which has challenged the global perception that desalination is a high cost source of water."

Since then, Hyflux has gone on to secure other large–scale water global projects including China's largest membrane–based seawater desalination plant in Tianjin Dagang which has a designed capacity of 100,000 m3 per day, Algeria's Souk Tleta Seawater Desalination Plant with a daily capacity of 200,000 m3, and the world's largest membrane–based desalination plant in Magtaa, Algeria which is designed to produce 500,000 m3 of water daily.
