July 9, 2002 -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published a new Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Manual, which can only be ordered from the National Service Center for Environmental Publications (NSCEP).
This manual provides up-to-date information about onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS) siting, design, installation, maintenance, and replacement. It discusses significant advances that can help OWTSs become more cost-effective and environmentally protective, particularly in small, suburban, and rural areas.
The manual promotes a performance-based approach to selecting and designing OWTSs. This approach will enable states and local communities to design onsite wastewater programs that fit local environmental conditions and communities' capabilities.
Please note that this manual is only available from the NSCEP--the National Small Flows Clearinghouse (NSFC) does not offer it at this time. To order, contact the NSCEP via:
Phone (800) 490-9198 or (513) 489-8190

Be sure to specify EPA Document Number 625/R-00/008 when ordering.
Funded by the EPA, the NSFC helps America's small communities and homeowners solve their wastewater problems by providing free and low-cost information about alternative onsite sewage systems. For more information, visit our Web site at http://www.nsfc.wvu.edu.
