WASHINGTON, D.C., May 15, 2002 -- The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on May 15 marked up S 1768, landmark legislation by California Senators Dianne Feinstein (D) and Barbara Boxer (D) to reauthorize the CALFED Bay-Delta Program.

Originally started under a three-year authorization in 1996, CALFED is a multi-agency partnership between the state and federal governments to restore the Sacramento/San Francisco Bay Delta ecosystem, improve the quality and reliability of water, and expand the state's total water supplies.

Companion legislation to S 1768 has moved forward in the House. HR 3208, sponsored by Rep. Ken Calvert (R-43), passed from the Resources Committee November 7, 2001, and is currently awaiting floor consideration.

ACWA's 440 public water agency members are collectively responsible for more than 90 percent of the water delivered in California for agricultural, municipal and industrial use.
