CENTRAL ISLIP, NY, AUGUST 16, 2016 -- Genesco will spend $5.25 million to clean up drinking water in two Long Island towns as part of a recent settlement for releasing dry-cleaning contaminants into groundwater, according to Courthouse News Service.
The Nashville-based textile company must now ensure the maintenance of water treatment and indoor air treatment at the Fulton Avenue Superfund Site in Hempstead and North Hempstead, according to the settlement. Genesco must also monitor groundwater at the site. The company is also now required to reimburse the EPA for ongoing monitoring at the site.
From 1965 to 1974, the site operated as a Genesco fabric-cutting mill. According to the settlement, the company did not properly dispose of dry cleaning chemical tetrachloroethylene at the mill.
Two affected public water wells are now being filtered and treated.
